  9. Thank you for this informative post. I used to live in London UK and we used to pray at the Jacob Benjamin Elias Synagogue in Stamford Hill. My father was from Bombay and there were many members of the synagogue who relocated from Calcutta to the UK.

  12. My father’s family donated the money to the Calcutta zoo and hence, the monkey house was named the Gubbay house. A picture of the Gubbay house hung in our library. When I was little, could not figure out why there were monkeys in front of the sign. My dad explained why! Also, in your article you mention J.E. Gubbay of the Sha’areh Rasone or Shaare Rason prayer hall. He was my grandfather, one of its original founders. Very exciting to see my family included in your travel blog!
