  2. As a die-hard fan of Mirza, I really loved this post. I knew about his Lucknow and Benaras trips, but wasn’t aware that he even visited Kolkata, though it was logical, considering the offices of East India Co.

    As you have mentioned hia addiction for gambling and drinking, Ghalib was once brought before a debtors court for repayment by one of his creditors. The magistrate was an Indian. After hearing the charges, he asked Ghalib if he has any defense. Ghalib recited:

    Karz ki peete the mai, lekin samajhte the, ki haan!
    Rang layegi hamari faqa-masti ek din!

    Though I borrowed and drank, I was aware that these shenanigans would take me to places some day!

    A bohemian and maverick shayar, indeed!
