There is a reason that tourist hotspots are so popular; after all they are the places that are seen to be ‘must visit’ areas – whether that’s the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Empire State Building in New York or The Colosseum in Italy. However, sometimes the best places to explore are a little more off the beaten path. Sometimes it exciting to visit these places as they seem like secret untouched havens, and sometimes it’s just the fact that there aren’t any people around! If you’re sick of the same old tourist hotspots, try these five places instead.
Sofia, Bulgaria
Despite being the capital of Bulgaria, this is a city that isn’t visited all that much, but it has been named one of Europe’s cheapest cities to explore. Not only is it cheap, but it is a real hidden gem! Most of the city is walkable and there are stunning churches, quirky markets and interesting architecture, along with a general cosmopolitan vibe.
Gothenburg, Sweden
Gothenburg is like a cheaper, less crowded version of Stockholm which is perfect if you still want to enjoy the charm of wooden houses and cobbled streets. That’s not to say that there isn’t plenty to love about this area – Långgatorna or ‘Little London’ is well worth a visit, as is the Lisebergs Nojespark theme park which has plenty of rides for thrill seekers or a beautiful sculpture garden for those who prefer a little less adrenaline.
Koh Rong, Cambodia
This stunning Cambodian island has to be seen to be believed. There are no roads, just fishing villages and the chance to enjoy snorkelling in the stunning turquoise waters. If you miss the Thailand of 20 years ago, untouched by tourists, then you will love Koh Rong, especially the beaches!
José Ignacio, Uruguay
You’ve probably never heard of this beautiful little place, but in winter a whole host of Latin celebrities, including Shakira, like to visit to explore the artsy bohemian boutiques and delicious food. There are only around 300 people who actually live there full time, so it is pretty quiet (which explains why A-listers love it!). However, there are plans to host an international art fair in the near future so enjoy this little piece of luxury before it comes another tourist trap!
Tanzania
There are few things as breathtaking as seeing a wild animal, such as a lion, chimpanzee or wildebeest, in their natural habitat – and few places as perfect to do this as well as Tanzania. Not only can you enjoy seeing majestic animals where they belong, but you can also relax on the stunning Zanzibar beaches or take a trip out on the beautiful waters. Although a safari could be seen as quite tourist-heavy, if you choose the right type of tour it will feel very intimate.
