    Iraq al-Amir – Qasr al-Abd & Tobiad Caves
    BySubhadip Mukherjee April 11, 2026April 11, 2026

It was day one of my tour of Jordan, and after visiting the Cave of the Seven Sleepers, it was time for a long drive to reach Qasr al-Abd. This is a small palace which is in ruins and lies near a village called Iraq al-Amir, so this is also known as Qasr Iraq Al-Amir…

Cave Of The Seven Sleepers – Jordan
    BySubhadip Mukherjee April 9, 2026April 11, 2026

After visiting the Roman Theatre, the next stop of the day was at the Cave of the Seven Sleepers. While researching tourist places in Amman, Jordan, I saw on the map that this place is a tourist destination. Though it is a tourist place, it is not part of the Jordan Pass, which gives you…

    Roman Theatre – Amman
    BySubhadip Mukherjee April 7, 2026April 7, 2026

Last year, in the month of May 2025, I visited Jordan and spent around ten days exploring the country. I had rented a car with which I had explored the whole country. I tried my best to cover almost everything that one could visit as a tourist. Starting the Jordan Series with the Roman Theatre…

Kolkata Good Friday – Goja Kirtan Procession
    BySubhadip Mukherjee April 4, 2026April 4, 2026

Religion is not constant across the globe; instead, some traditional celebrations often form a part of it as it mixes with the local culture. Kolkata has a small Christian community, and within that, there is also another smaller community known as the Bengali Christians. This smaller community of Christians have people with surnames such as…

    Locating Ballygunge Rifle Range
    BySubhadip Mukherjee March 30, 2026March 30, 2026

The more I dig into the history of Ballygunge, the place where my house is, the more I am surprised as to how historical this place is and how dramatically this place has changed over the past century. Sometime back, I had already written about Bondel Road, so this time I shift my attention to…

    Koch Pukur Archaeological Site
    BySubhadip Mukherjee March 16, 2026March 16, 2026

When I was a small kid, my grandmother would often tell stories of Bengal when Calcutta experienced load shedding (power cuts) in the 1980s. One thing that she used to keep saying is how close the Bidyadhari River used to flow from Ballygunge. Which, honestly, back then, I never gave a second thought, and when…

A small village named Iraq al-Amir, located on the outskirts of Amman, #Jordan, has a small stone castle called Qasr al-Abd surrounded by Olive gardens. This was built by Hyrcanus of Jerusalem, who was a Tobiad, a Jewish dynasty. This castle remained incomplete after his sudden death and was severely damaged in the 363 AD earthquake that had struck this region for two days in a row. Apart from the castle, there are some stone cave tombs of the Tobiads.
