  2. Thanks Subhadip
A Great presentation of the Portuguese Cemetery, now known as St John’s Church cemetery, Sealdah.
Good photographs too. Fr Henri Depelchin, SJ, the founder of St Xavier’s College Park Street is buried there in the Jesuit Fathers section, close to the entrance itself. You will find his name on the white marble plaques set on the red walls. Recently, the famous educationist Sr Cyril Mooney, IBVM, was buried there too. Among many others, these two Great educationists stand out, whose contributions are unforgettable for Calcuttans ! only a pathway separates these two graves ! It is inspiring to visit their graves !

  3. Thank you very much for this post…Well the grave of Mr and Mrs. D’cruz of the 18th century did help me to understand that our existence of the Portuguese Clan did exist on this side of West Bengal..And ther graves during the 18th Century di point that out to me..We the Portuguese clan have immense contribution to Kolkata right from this cemetry itself and the church extending to Culture,Language etc etc..Thanks for this lovely post.
I did visit this place many times during my times In Kolkata in the 80s and 90’s ..and also pass this place daily on my way to college from Sealdah Station…Did not know that my ancestors of our Community, the D’Cruz Couple lay in rest there…May their souls RIP..Would surely visit on my next trip to Kolkata and light a Candle at the grave..Amen
