Memorial Square Tashkent
Traveling across the globe I make sure to visit some memorial or cemetery which has any connection with World War and the city of Tashkent in Uzbekistan is no exception. There was no battle front in Uzbekistan territory which was under the USSR but it played a vital role in the war. Memorial Square in Tashkent was built in honor of the fallen soldiers and features an eternal flame.
WWII And Uzbekistan
One and a half million people who back then were residing in Uzbekistan joined the war. Unfortunately, nearly four hundred and twenty thousand never returned and six hundred and forty thousand suffered injuries from the war. The battle that proved to be a turning point of WWII was the Battle of Moscow where the German Army desperately wanted to capture the city of Moscow and faced stiff resistance from the Red Army.
Ultimately as we all know this is when the weakened German lines started to fall apart and had to retreat and ultimately their defeat.
It was not just the supply of men and women to fight the war that Uzbekistan had contributed, a vast majority of people from the USSR had been relocated to Uzbekistan to escape the war. Many industries continued to increase their production which had direct supply related to the war effort. Artilleries, ammunition, aircraft, etc. were all produced in increased quantity to meet the demand.
The agricultural sector was no less and a massive increase in cultivable land was undertaken to maintain a steady supply of food for the rest of the nation.
Many war veterans who are still alive continue to live in Uzbekistan and are revered for their participation. May 9th is commemorated as a Day of Remembrance and Homage.
Memorial Square In Tashkent
The Memorial Square is located on Sharaf Rashidov Avenue, you can find Ankhor Park located behind it. There are two large rectangular fountains located right next to the main road, right behind the fountain you will find a park with dense pine trees. Narrow roads lead in between the trees which will take you to Memorial Square.
The Memorial Square is a large area having many things such as the Eternal Flame, Sorrowful Mother Monument, and a list of names of fallen soldiers.
The Eternal Flame sits right in the middle of a sloped circular section. The flame keeps burning non-stop in memory of the dead.
Right Opposite of the Eternal Flame is the statue of a Sorrowful Mother. This is a representation of thousands of mothers whose sons and daughters sacrificed themselves for the nation.
On the opposite side, there are two rows of shaded platforms. These store the names of the fallen soldiers along with the year that they died. The memorial is in the form of a book in series with metal pages and has the names etched on them.
There is another bigger Victory Park in Tashkent which should not be confused with the Memorial Park. The Victory Park features a large monument to commemorate the victory of the soldiers in WWII and also houses a museum. If you are interested in WWII then that should also be on your list while touring Tashkent.
